2nd and Multi 1/2 Grade: Google Earth Reflections

December 11th, 2008 - No Responses

Earlier in the year, 2nd grade and Multi 1/2 students explored the earth with the amazing tool, Google Earth. We explored our town of Wells, ME, visited favorite places around the Earth, and then used a picture of our school from Google Earth to create a map with labels.

Here are the reflections of what students thought about using this tool:

3rd Grade & Multi 3/4 WES Logo Designs

November 15th, 2008 - No Responses

In this lesson, students accomplished the following Mastery Objectives:

  • You will identify what makes a design successful.
  • You will use technology to create your own design.
  • You will discern between a bitmap and a vector image.
  • You will upload a file to the Internet.
  • You will download and save the file after “vectorizing” it.

Influenced by the work of Daniel Pink and the importance of teaching Design, the lesson had students first examine professional logo designs, come up with identifiers and specifics that made the logos successful, and then generate a list of words that represent Wells Elementary School. From there, they made sketches for their design ideas (incorporating what they learned about successful logos), and then moved onto creating them in a graphics program (KidPix). In order to “polish” their designs and overcome the limitations imposed by drawing with a computer mouse, students uploaded the designs to VectorMagic in order to transform them from bitmap images to vector images, making their artwork more crisp, clear, and professional.

4th Grade: “Night on Bald Mountain: Performance

November 2nd, 2008 - One Response

Multi 3/4 and 4th grade students gathered together and participated in an integrated unit entitled “THERE IS MORE THAN ONE WAY TO TELL A STORY”. Through the disciplines of Music, Physical Education, Art, and Technology, students explored developing and communicating a story through creative and choreographed movement using masks they created in Art to help develop their character.

After performing for multi 1/2 and 3rd grade classes, they continued the project in Computer by learning some basic photography skills, taking digital photos, and enhancing those photos in a graphics editor to create the “mood” of the music.

This unit was developed through the integration of the Core Team curriculums and presented to the students during Day 6 classes.
